Object Lesson | Salt vs Sugar
Source (Where I saw it): Original
Supplies: Two bowls, some salt, some sugar
Preparation: In one bowl pour a little salt, in the other bowl pour a little sugar.
The object lesson & how I used it...
Main Point: It is our actions that identifies who we are!
Illustration: Walk up to the front and tell the kids you need a volunteer. Show them the two bowls and ask them if they can tell you what is in each bowl just by looking at them. Both bowls contain something small and white, but you can’t identify what they are just by looking at them. Have your volunteer taste each bowl and then ask them what is in it. Salt and sugar!
Explanation: Have the volunteer return to their seat and explain that you couldn’t identify what each were until they were in your mouth and acted on your tongue! Then anyone could tell almost immediately what each were. In the same why we can’t really tell who a person truly is just by looking at them. Until we get to know them, and see their actions we don’t know who they are and what they believe in. If someone says they really care about people and then go around punching people in the face, then their actions don’t back up who they say they are. In the same way if we call ourselves Christians, our actions should back that up through our love for others. We share God’s love in our lives by serving others, just like Jesus!

Object Lesson | Pepper Looking Like Salt

Supplies: Pepper and a shaker that is not see through, but very distinguishable as a salt shaker.
Preparation: Fill the salt shaker with pepper.
The object lesson & how I used it...
Main Point: Our inside should match our outside!
Illustration: Come to the front and show the boys and girls the shaker. Who knows what this is? That’s right it is a salt shaker. You can use salt for a lot of things. It makes food taste better, you can use it preserve food, and there are many other uses for salt as well. Now if I am looking to use salt and then I pour this out (pour some out) I would expect salt to come out. Now is this salt? No! It’s pepper! But on the outside this looks like a salt shaker. The inside does not match the outside.
Explanation: We are the same way. When the pepper came out of the shaker there is no confusing what it is. Even though the shaker would want us to think it was salt, it was definitely pepper. Sometimes we tell people that we love God, and we may even come to church, listen, and participate in worship, but if we then during the week do all the things opposite of what God would want for lives then the truth is coming out. We may say we are salt, but pepper is coming out. We can’t worship God on Sunday, and then cuss at people on Monday. We can’t say God I love you on Wednesday night, and then constantly disobey our parents with no regret. Our inside and outside need to match! And when we do mess up, we apologize and do our best to be better! We worship God through our consistent actions and words!

Object Lesson | Salt In Everything!

Supplies: Salt and various foods
Preparation: Have the various foods out on a plate.
The object lesson & how I used it...
Main Point: People should know we love God!
Illustration: Have various foods out on a plate and explain to the kids about salt. Salt has a very powerful taste. When used correctly, salt helps food taste better. It also is used to make food last longer. The biggest thing about salt is that when it is still good you can taste it on anything it gets on. Pour it on the different foods. You can let the a child or leader taste each food. Then explain: Even if you shake it off the salt has made an impact on it. There is no way for it not to be impacted by the salt. Jesus called us salt because our life should affected other people all around us. If we lose our saltiness, then aren’t doing what God wants us to do.

Object Lesson | Salt and Pepper

Supplies: Plastic Plate, Salt, Pepper, Plastic Spoon
Preparation: None
The object lesson & how I used it...
Main Point: We may think a relationship is destroyed and that we can't forgive someone. God wants us to forgive and has set the example, because he forgave us.
Illustration: Pour a small amount of salt on the plate. Talk about the salt being like us--pure. Sprinkle a little pepper in the salt. None of us is perfect; we all sin and become like this salt with pepper in it: impure. Is there anyway for us to clean the salt without destroying it? Bring out the plastic spoon and rub it on your clothes. Talk about how God can do anything, and with God's help we can forgive people too. God forgives us of absolutely anything, and if we put our trust in Him, he can help us forgive what we think is unforgivable. Place the spoon over the salt and pepper--the pepper will leap to the spoon, leaving the salt clean again.
